Isaac Newton once said, “We build too many walls and not enough bridges”. But that’s not the case at all with Mumbai, a city with hundreds of bridges with a rich history. Some of them even date back to the British colonial times and have been connecting people, places, and stories from time immemorial, leading people to their destinations.
What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of a bridge?
Connectivity? Convenience? Development? Or the life surrounding it and thrives under it? Photographer Shreyas Vanmali‘s photo series perfectly encapsulates the way bridges and skywalks complement the bustling, busy and alive city life of Mumbai and enhance the beauty of this great city.
These photographs make you notice the different shapes and size these concrete structures morph into, and the stark contrasts they create against the sky. Bridges in Mumbai remind you of veins in a body, maintaining a circulation of a kind, twisting and turning into beautiful metaphors. These photographs may seem simple enough at first glance, but you start noticing a lot of activity once you zoom in and pay attention. You will see a variety of activities. People selling different kinds of flowers. Vegetable vendors. Street Merchants. Vehicles zooming past. People walking through all the chaos. Sometimes even pausing to buy something or at least bargain for the sake of it. Every photograph tells you a story. You just have to listen to what the bridges have to say, and go where they take you!
